The President of District 8 of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation says he's not sure what the Province is gaining by pushing this year's March Break back one month.
Education Minister, Stephen Lecce announced on Thursday that March Break would be moved from the week of March 15th to the week of April 12th.
Shane Restall says the extra month will place a significant strain on students, their families and staff.
Restall says March Break is a to relax. "March Break is a time for students and their families and staff to unwind and catch up on sleep and staff to catch up on marking in some cases and they're going to be charging ahead for a whole extra month."
He says all of the unions, all of the principal's councils and all of the school boards have said they're against the move and he questions the reasons behind it.
Restall adds he doesn't see any real benefits, but he does see a great inconvenience for everyone involved. "We know that families in our communities have scheduled time off work because that's when their children are off of school, so they can spend time with their families. And now I don't know if those families will be able to change their schedules."
Restall says he's not confident that employers will be able to pivot to the change that quickly.
