The Municipality of Bluewater is reminding residents to be extremely careful near the Lake Huron shoreline this winter.
With ice forming on the lake again, it tends to break up, refreeze and get pushed toward the shoreline. This typically forms ice shelves that stick out a few meters from the shoreline's edge, and looks at times like stable ground. This ice is extremely fragile and is not safe to walk on, because unlike the ice that forms over bodies of standing water, ice forming over the Great Lakes is thinner and less stable because the lake is always moving beneath it. A wrong step could send someone into an unseen crack in the ice shelf, and cause the person to become trapped under the ice.
The municipality as well as local police forces and the OPP are urging residents to enjoy the sight lines along the Lake Huron shoreline from a safe distance this winter to ensure everyone remains safe.
