OPP, OFSC urges riders to use caution

The OPP is urging snowmobilers to stay off frozen water ways while the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs is urging riders to stay off closed OFSC trails.

On Sunday, three people died in two separate incidents after their snowmobiles broke through the ice on Georgian Bay.

Rohan Thompson is the Provincial Commander of the OPP's Highway Safety Division.

He says about 40 per cent of OPP-investigated fatal snowmobile incidents in the last 10 years have occurred on lakes and rivers. Excessive speed and alcohol and drugs are other top contributing factors in snowmobile deaths.

Riders are also encouraged to check the OFSC Interactive Trail Guide for information on trail openings and closings.

This week is Snowmobile Safety Week.
