COVID-19 Outbreaks continue at Midwestern Ontario Long Term Care and Retirement Homes

Several long term care and retirement homes are battling serious COVID-19 outbreaks in Midwestern Ontario.

Huron Perth Public Health reported Thursday that another 28 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the past day. 20 of the new cases are in North Perth. There are outbreaks at eight Long Term Care Homes and two retirement homes. The most severe outbreaks are in North Perth and Exeter.  36 cases were detected at Caressant Care nursing and retirement homes in North Perth , and there have been 46 cases at Exeter Villa.  One hundred cases are still active and there are six people in hospital. The virus has claimed 25 lives in Huron and Perth.

Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health officials reported 53 new cases of COVID-19 and 418 active cases.  Six people are in hospital. 13 of the new cases are in Wellington county, where there are 88 active cases, and two hospitalizations. Seven people have died. The Caressant Care facilities in Arthur have recorded 71 cases among residents and staff in an ongoing outbreak. There are also outbreaks at Caressant Care in Harriston, and Strathcona Long Term Care in Mount Forest. An asymptomatic employee at Wellington Terrace in Fergus has also tested positive. Prior to this positive test result, Wellington Terrace was placed in facility-wide outbreak status which was set to expire on January 21. The facility-wide outbreak status has now been extended until January 25.

The Grey Bruce Health Unit reports no ongoing outbreaks in their region.  There were  eight new cases added Thursday.  There are 61 active cases and one probable case. Three people are in hospital.
