Wellington County plans to improve four bridges on Road 109 near Arthur

Wellington County plans improvements to four bridges on Wellington Road 109 near Arthur that are in an advanced state of deterioration.

Regular inspections also showed the bridges over the Conestogo River have some elements that do not meet current standards.

The bridges were constructed between 1930 and 1934 and Wellington County took over ownership of the bridges when that section of the former Highway 9 was downloaded to the County in 1998.

Given the close proximity of the bridges to one another, the County is completing the planning and design of all four bridges under one Class Environmental Assessment Study.

Do to the challenges construction would present to residents, business owners, and travelers, the county is looking at options including rehabilitation or replacement.

The County will also consider the feasibility and cost, for comparison purposes, of a localized permanent realignment of Wellington Road 109 that would eliminate or reduce the multiple crossings and the need for future works.

The public can learn more and comment on the proposed project on the Wellington County website.
