Mayor says work at Sauble Beach is due to safety concerns

The mayor for South Bruce Peninsula says there is a proposal to cut back sand dunes at Sauble Beach because in some areas the dunes have grown out onto the road.

She says that's preventing some vehicles trying to park at the side of the road from getting completely off the road.

Jackson says that's a serious safety issue and the amount of dune they're proposing to move back is minimal.

“Vegetation starts to grow and encroach upon the shoulder of the road. So we push it back each year so that we're maintaining enough depth for parking, so that cars can safely be off the road. Right now the backs of larger vehicles and certainly trucks, are hanging right over Lakeshore Boulevard,” said Jackson.

Jackson says they can have over a million visitors to the beach every year and vehicles need space to get off of the road.

“In the area that we're working, the dune from Lakeshore Road to the water is sixty feet deep and we're talking about taking off two feet of the back. I think the most extreme we need to go is six feet out of sixty foot depth of dune,” added Jackson.
