Central Huron to stay with two ward system

Central Huron is sticking with the ward system, at least for the next municipal election.

Under the current system, Clinton and Hullet make up the East Ward and the former Goderich Township is the West Ward.

Mayor Jim Ginn says staff had recently being asked to look into the possibility of moving to a single ward system.

“We found out a few years ago that you don't need to live in a riding to run in that riding. So a person from the east ward could run in the west ward and vice versa. So why not let everyone decide who they want to vote for,” said Ginn.

The disadvantage of going to a single ward is that new councillors, you know if you put out signs, which is customary, it's a higher cost to people to run in the first place and we saw that as a deterrent."

Staff was asked recently to look into the possibility of going to a single ward says but council voted against it at their last meeting.
