Huron County wants governments to recognize homeless issue

The Mayor of South Huron has asked Huron County council for support in an effort to get the Federal and Provincial governments to declare homelessness a national crisis.

George Finch points out homelessness is no longer just a big city issue and it's time it was recognized as a problems in communities throughout the country.

"It should be considered a crisis across Canada. There isn't an M-P in Canada that doesn't walk past the homeless in Ottawa, towards Parliament Hill. So it's affecting them, it's affecting us, it's affecting everybody across the country and we just can no longer ignore it. So let's move forward on it," said Finch. "The Province and the Federal government do fund it, but we are starting to have to fund it through our levy and that's not fair to the county when this is a problem that really could be taken into control by the Federal and Provincial governments. They do provide funding. I'm not saying they don't. But they're going to have to really step up to the plate and really address this problem."

Huron County council supported his motion and draft a letter to be sent to the Federal and Provincial governments.

"But it's time for all levels of government to really start realizing that we need to take some of these more addictive drugs out of circulation and make them prohibitive from even coming into the country and no longer use them, because that seems to be the root of all the problems. And then you have the mental issues too. So if we can take out one component of it, that would help us, but we need to work together," added Finch.
