A newly created group is hoping to save as many old barns as possible in Ontario.
Ontario Barn Preservation Vice-President Krista Hulshof said the group was incorporated as not for profit in March of 2019 and its goal is to preserve as many heritage barns in Ontario as possible. She said that could be done in a number of ways.
"Whether that's in documenting it or changing policy and advocating for policy changes to encourage people to save barns, to educate people on how to maintain their barns, to create a sort of clearinghouse for all things Ontario Heritage barn related."
Hulshof said their big project last year was sending out a letter regarding severances to several councils and they have another goal in mind for this year.
"Our big project this year and next year will be to start an Ontario-wide barn directory and our goal would be to document all of our heritage barns in Ontario."
Hulshof said they even have a classified section on their web page for people who are looking to buy or sell barn frames and one of their long terms goals is to fund some restoration of heritage barns.
Hulshof adds they realize they can't save every barn and it is not their intention to mandate or force people to preserve their barn, they just want to help people who do want to preserve their barns.
