North Perth Council received the results of a recent survey regarding the potential of urban chickens at their meeting last week.
CAO Kris Snell said the survey had over 500 responses.
"The survey was split roughly 60-40. So 60 percent were in favour of urban chickens and 40 percent were opposed, so it certainly is an issue that council is still in the fact-finding and gathering information stage of right now."
Snell said they have examined other municipalities that allow urban chickens, and if it were something the council wanted to maybe allow, some by-laws would need to be changed.
"So currently our zoning by-law does not permit the keeping of certain animals, including chickens, in an urban setting. So that would be the first thing that would have to happen is we would need to change our zoning by-law, which does require, under the planning act, a public meeting."
Right now, Snell said more studies and information still need to be presented, but the issue will be addressed again at a future council meeting, most likely in the spring of next year.
