Mapleton Township has enacted a new bylaw designed to prohibit heavy trucks on side streets within the small community of Alma.
Recently, truck traffic has been funnelled into the village after Wellington County approved signage encouraging truck traffic to use Wellington Roads 7 and 17, rather than travelling through Fergus on Highway 6, with many of the trucks utilizing Nesbitt Street as a bypass around the intersection traffic light in order to avoid a delay.
Chief Administration Officer Manny Baron noted in this week's council meeting that trucks using Nesbitt Street have created a "highly dangerous situation" at this residential street that does not have any sidewalks for pedestrian use.
The report at council noted heavy truck prohibition signs will be erected at the four entry points to Alma on Wellington Roads 7 and 17.
The bylaw includes exceptions for emergency vehicles, buses or public utility vehicles.
