Bruce Power leaders honoured with CEO World Awards

Two Bruce Power leaders have been recognized by the 2020 CEO World Awards.

President and Chief Executive Officer Mike Rencheck and Executive Vice-President, Corporate Affairs and Operational Services James Scongack are Gold winners in the eighth annual CEO World Awards.

Bruce Power said Rencheck is the Gold winner as the Executive of the Year in the Energy and Utilities category. Scongack is receiving the Gold award for Executive Achievement of the Year in Energy Utilities.

Rencheck has led Bruce Power through an extremely challenging 2020 in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bruce Power said the company has continued to produce 30 per cent of Ontario's electricity at 30 per cent less than the average cost to generate residential power, and continues its production of medical isotopes. Bruce Power also worked with the Government of Ontario, public health officials in Bruce, Grey, Huron and Perth counties, along with local municipalities, organizations and businesses, to provide support during the pandemic through the purchase and procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE), funding for COVID-19 research, more than $500,000 in donations to food banks and several other initiatives.

"Being recognized by the CEO World Awards is a tremendous honour and one that I share with the employees and contractors whose work every day has allowed us to keep providing Ontarians with clean, reliable, low-cost electricity," Rencheck said in a news release. "Our Safety First focus has played a significant role during COVID-19 not only in allowing us to continue producing electricity and medical isotopes, but in also realizing we have an obligation to help keep our communities safe."

Scongack is being recognized for his work in spearheading the creation of the Canadian Nuclear Isotope Council; a diverse coalition within health care, energy and academia, as well as serving as its chair.

"James has been instrumental in highlighting the leadership shown by both Bruce Power and the Canadian nuclear play in the production of medical isotopes, and I'm extremely pleased he's also being honoured as a Gold winner," said Rencheck.

The CNIC has proactively communicated with government and companies in the nuclear energy industry to increase awareness around the critical need for medical isotopes which are used to sterilize medical equipment and in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other illness in health-care facilities here at home and around the world.

"I accept this CEO World Awards honour with great pride because it shines a light on Canada's place as a world leader in the production of medical isotopes that are advancing health care globally and also saving lives," said Scongack. "More than ever, our doctors, nurses, diagnostic imaging staff and others in health care are relying on our commitment to produce existing isotopes and to be innovative in finding new ones. I'm very grateful to Mike for his strong advocacy around medical isotopes, and for the tremendous leadership he's shown during the pandemic to keep our business on track while never forgetting we also have a commitment to keeping safe our workers, their families and the people in our communities."
