The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority has had to cancel this year's annual turtle release because of COVID-19.
The release of baby turtles attracted over 1,500 people last year.
Healthy Watersheds Technician, Hope Brock says this year they putting up a series of social media posts.
"So this year we're going to have a series of social media posts, so people can still learn about turtles and they can do some activities and they can still think about turtles and what we can do to help protect turtles," said Brock.
Brock points out all of the turtle species commonly found in Ontario are on the endangered species list.
"So we do hear a lot about how we can help them cross the road and look out for them during the times of year when they're on the road. But, also we need to talk about wetlands habitat and how turtles need wetlands and if we don't protect wetlands then we could lose these turtles as well," added Brock.
The turtle campaign began yesterday with a turtle colouring page contest. Randomly selected winners can win a turtle or wetland-themed face mask. The deadline for colouring pages is August 31.
