One of the most remarkable and well-loved citizens of Wiarton has passed away.
Arthur Haley died Sunday at the age of 104. Art, as he was known, had received so many awards of recognition for service to his community there was barely enough room on the walls of his Wiarton home to hang them all.
South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Janice Jackson said Haley was one of Wiarton's greatest natural resources.
"He was our town's ambassador and we were very, very proud of him. So lucky to have someone like Art in our community. He just never slowed down. He was remarkable," said Jackson.
Haley was awarded a lifetime membership in the Royal Canadian Legion Wiarton Branch 208. His interest in young people prompted him to develop a youth education program to teach the children and about the Second World War, of which he was a decorated veteran. He was also an author and a poet.
In 2016 Haley was named Ontario Senior of the Year.
Jackson said what stood out about Haley was his love of life.
"He cherished every moment that he had. Every time I saw him he would joke about how he was so happy to be still around and enjoying life and giving back to the community."
