Woman airlifted to hospital after backyard fire

A 53-year-old woman has serious injuries after her clothes caught fire during a backyard bonfire in Fergus.

Wellington County OPP said the incident happened on Saturday night. Provincial police along with Centre Wellington Fire Rescue and Guelph-Wellington Paramedic Services were called to a residence around 7:30 p.m.

Police said the woman and a small group of people were around a fire pit at the time. After the woman's clothing caught fire, witnesses were able to put out the flames and give first aid care.

The 53-year-old was transported to a trauma centre via air ambulance.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
