New Owen Sound police chief takes over leadership

Owen Sound's new police chief has officially taken over the post.

Craig Ambrose was sworn in at a change of command ceremony Friday, attended by police officials, city representatives, friends and family.

Ambrose, 51, comes from Waterloo Region Police Services. He's been a police officer for almost 30 years and is the 16th chief in the history of the Owen Services.

He said he is looking forward to his new position.

"I've been here about four weeks now. It's been amazing, the people that I have working with me, my leadership team are outstanding. I'm coming to a great organization and they have really helped me along the way," said Ambrose in an interview after the ceremony.

He said, in a way, coming to Owen Sound is like coming home.

"I love the community, I love the smaller nature of the community. I'm from a smaller town outside the Waterloo region, my wife is originally from Owen Sound so for us it's like moving back," he said.

Ambrose takes over as chief of Owen Sound police for the now-retired Bill Sornberger.
