Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson visited a local corporation in Walkerton to present a special cheque from the province.
Larsen and Shaw Limited is doing a new expansion in their facility, and they were successful in securing a grant to aid them with their project. Thompson says the investment from the government is geared toward helping local businesses like Larsen and Shaw.
"We've enabled them to build on their 100 years of success, and the money that we've presented to them today, $430,000, is going to enable them to embrace technology."
Larsen and Shaw have completed phase 1 of their L1 project, which will expand their productivity and their workforce over a 4 or 5 year period. Thompson says the province is committed to helping local businesses thrive and innovate.
"The investment today is going to enable Larsen and Shaw to grow their market and compete in a very innovative way around the world."
Larsen and Shaw celebrated their 100th anniversary this year. They specialize in hinges. Their President and CEO, Mary Jane Bushell, says the investment from the government will allow them to complete their expansion in all the ways they were hoping to.
"There's a lot of new automation and technology out there, but it comes at a very high price, so this is a very large investment on the part of the company, and it's just really great to see that the province of Ontario has got our back on it, as well."
Going forward, as the L1 project is completed at the facility, Bushell says the investment in the upgrades for staff anf the company as a whole, with the help from the government, will allow them to significantly grow their business.
"This project in and of itself is going to help us compete globally much more effectively on certain product lines, but of course the idea will be, whatever we learn from this project will be applied and improved upon in processes across the plant."
