Black bear killed by truck in Owen Sound prompts warning from police

A flatbed truck hit a 250-pound black bear in Owen Sound early Thursday morning, prompting a call from police for residents to be aware of wildlife at night.

The incident took place around 2:25 a.m. on 16th Street East in an area with no artificial street lighting, which caused reduced visibility.

The bear succumbed to it's injuries as a result of the collision.

Due to the large size of the bear, Owen Sound police contacted the Public Works department, who removed the bear with a front-end loader.

The driver was not injured.

Police remind drivers to be vigilant when driving on roadways at night, and to be cautious of wildlife, even within city limits.
