Huron County starts planning for changing weather patterns

Huron County is in the process of developing a Corporate Climate Adaptation Plan.

"The county is trying to prepare for the future and so we're looking at climate projection data and then sort of looking at the county's corporation and their services, and then we'll be developing a plan that puts in place measures to ensure that we're prepared," said Climate Change and Energy Specialist Lily Hamlin, who is spearheading the project.

Hamlin said they're in the early stages of the process and she's collecting information and relevant projections.

"Greenhouse gas inventory for the corporation will be used to do a vulnerability and risk assessment. From that we'll identify specifically where we need to put in place strategies and then we'll divide those strategies and put them into a plan," she said

Huron County's proximity to Lake Huron will be a factor, and Hamlin pointed to data that predicts lake-effect snow will likely increase, along with more extreme wind storms.

Hamlin said she hopes to have a plan ready by next summer.
