Perth East residents warned of phone scam

Perth County OPP and the Township of Perth East are warning residents about an ongoing scam where someone is identifying themselves as a municipal employee.

According to a Facebook message from the township, residents in Perth East are receiving calls from someone claiming to be with the township and demanding personal information.

Perth East officials said they do not call asking for information of that nature, and if anyone does, hang up and report the incident to police.

Perth County OPP Acting Sergeant Barry Cookson said this is the first instance he's heard of a township or municipality having this problem.

"If someone becomes aggressive on the phone, no matter the circumstance, if you feel it's a scam, the best thing you can do is hang up," he said.
