OSSTF District 8 president refutes province's claim its backed off on increasing class sizes

The president of District 8 of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation says the province's announcement is backing away for their original proposal to allow up to 28 students in a class is misleading.

The announcement said that would be reduced to a cap of 25 students.

But Shane Restall said that's still a significant increase from the current cap of 22.5 students.

“What's misleading is the new position that they tabled yesterday at the central table, he voiced it as a decrease in class size, but that's a significant increase in class size that will lead to 5,000 fewer teachers by 2023," he said.

Restall added what wasn't mentioned was the removal of some local cap size language. He said in Huron and Bruce, OSSTF has negotiated a cap in places like a tech area where a maximum of 20 students can be in a tech class for safety reasons.

Restall said under the government's new announcement, all of that is gone.
