Approximately 200 people rallied in Goderich today as part of an international day of action as millions around the world participate in Climate Strikes.
The event in Goderich featured a live band, impassioned speeches including from Dr. Jim Hollingsworth with 'Green Goderich', and finishing up with a march around Courthouse Square.
In his speech, Dr. Hollingsworth described recent troubling statistics, noting "climate change is already having an impact on human health", saying "a quarter of a million lives will be lost by 2030 due to the effects of climate change".
Furthermore, Hollingsworth said "hundreds of millions around the world will be in poverty due to climate change by 2050", saying "there are 7,100 death in Canada each year due to the effects of fossil fuels".
Hollingsworth says adults owe it to the "Greta Thunberg's of the world to provide action at this critical juncture of our history".
According to GlobalClimateStrike.net, Midwestern Ontario is the site of four recognized climate strikes on Friday: Goderich, Durham, Markdale and Owen Sound, with hundreds more rallies taking place across the country.
Thousands of Canadians are taking part, capping off a week of protests internationally, with calls to do more to slow global warming.
