South Bruce OPP charge dozens of motorists

South Bruce OPP officers are urging residents to take responsibility for their safety after dozens of motorists were caught driving too fast, while distracted or impaired.

South Bruce OPP charged 54 drivers with speeding, three were charged with stunt driving and one motorist was charged with distracted driving during a labour day weekend campaign.

Two drivers were arrested and charged with impaired driving and another received a three-day suspension following a warn range result at the roadside. South Bruce OPP officers responded to one collision during the long weekend. There were minor injuries reported at the scene.

Throughout Ontario, OPP responded to seven traffic and two off-road vehicle deaths. Two people died in an off-road vehicle incident; one of the victims was not wearing a helmet. That's two more fatalities than during the same period last year, with one death attributed to inattention.

The OPP laid 263 distracted driving charges during their Labour Day weekend campaign. Over and above the campaign, officers were kept busy right through the weekend, laying a total of 8,179 charges throughout the province. Speeding topped the list at 5,021 charges, with an additional 174 charges laid for racing/stunt driving.
