The mayor of Goderich is pleased, but not surprised, that Goderich was included in the top ten small towns to check out in Canada on a Nova Scotia website.
The website, Canada.com, featured small towns with big personalities and Goderich was listed behind Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia and Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Mayor John Grace said given what Goderich has to offer, that's not a surprise.
“For one community to have such a deep-water harbour and the whole beachfront to the downtown core, to the Square as we know it, it's actually an octagon in the centre of our community. Also the architecture all through the old community. We're almost 200 years old," he said.
Grace added that list doesn't include the best feature – the people.
“We're also very proud of who we are, what we are, as a local community and as a county," he said. "And I don't think you want to change the character by a huge build-out, but you want something sustainable and you do want growth. We need growth in today's environment.”
Grace said most people recognize Goderich and Huron County needs growth, but not at the expense of the character that exists in the small communities throughout the county.
