OPP release stats on Canada Day weekend enforcement

The Canada Day long weekend took a tragic turn on OPP-patrolled roads and waterways across the province.

The OPP responded to four fatal collisions in which five people lost their lives. Two motorcyclists were among those who died. The deceased, all males, ranged in age from 26 to 61.

While there were no boating deaths, officers did respond to three drownings over the weekend. All three victims were men between 25 and 37 years old.

The OPP also reported one off-road vehicle incident in which a 21-year-old male died.

The OPP's long weekend Aggressive Driving Campaign resulted in more than 8,800 traffic charges, including 5,303 for speeding.

Other charges include 418 seat belt infractions, 116 distracted driving fines, and 96 charges for alcohol or drug-impaired driving.
