The "grandparents scam" is circulating in North Perth again.
North Perth OPP were contacted by a resident this week, reporting that they sent a large sum of money to a person they thought was their grandson. The fake-grandson had told the victim that he had been in a car crash in Quebec and needed money to get out of jail.
The victim realized too late that their grandson was not in any trouble.
The OPP are warning residents to never send money or give credit card, online account details or copies of personal documents to anyone you don't know or trust, and never by email. Avoid any arrangement with a stranger that asks for up-front payment via money order, wire transfer, international funds transfer, pre-loaded card or electronic currency.
Although it may be difficult to recover the money you have lost to a scam, by reporting this to authorities you are warning other people which can minimize the chances of others becoming a victim.
