Huron County part of effort to find replacement for inter-library loan system

Huron County Cultural Services is currently working with other libraries across Southern Ontario to find something to replace the service previously provided by the Southern Ontario Library Service.

The provincial government cut the SOL budget by 50 per cent, which led to the SOL eliminating the delivery service they had been providing to libraries across Southern Ontario.

Cultural Services Director Beth Rumble said Huron County residents borrowed about 4,500 materials in 2018, so they definitely want to find a solution.

One option the provincial government offered is that Southern Ontario adopt the model used in Northern Ontario.  She explained, instead of having vans driving across Northern Ontario, they use the Canada Post book rate.  On average, that works out to about two dollars per item.

But Rumble said that's not something they've budgeted for, so at this point, they are trying to find efficiencies to reduce their current costs and allow them to deliver the service.
