Councillors in Goderich are looking over a number of options regarding the future of the town's Memorial Arena.
The ice was removed from the arena last fall after an ammonia leak was found in the ice-making system.
Mayor John Grace said council received a report from staff this week outlining possible options that included re-purposing the arena, selling it or demolishing it.
The staff recommendation was to demolish the arena, but the mayor said council has not started discussing the options at this point.
"Where we're at right now is, do we re-purpose it, do we sell it, or do we demolish it, with the intention of looking to twin the other arena over at the MRC," he said.
Grace said putting a new ice system in the arena would probably cost about $2 million, so that's not likely. Council also has to assess the need for two ice pads in the town and if that is the case, they'd look at adding a second ice pad at the Maitland Rec Centre, but even through would likely be two or three years away.
Grace said council is going to consult with Goderich residents and take as long as it takes to make the right decision.
"We're studying the document and whether it's next month, two months or three months or in the fall, we're going to take our time about this," he said. "This is a big decision."
