North Huron studies subdivision proposal south of Wingham

North Huron Council is looking at the potential for developing a new subdivision in Hutton Heights, south of Wingham.

The area being examined is a 37-acre property purchased by North Huron in 2007.

In his presentation to council, BM Ross Senior Engineer Bruce Potter noted a subdivision development of this size is an expensive proposition but feels council's response is measured and responsible.

If North Huron proceeds quickly, Potter said he felt studies could wrap up later this year, with construction beginning sometime around the summer of 2021.

North Huron Director of Finance Donna White spoke to the economic benefit of a subdivision of this size, noting there would be "significant tax dollars if we can get this off the ground".

A slide in White's presentation showed annual taxes of about $147,000 for an 80-unit subdivision.

"We have to make new ways to get taxes, that's all there is to it. We cannot burden our taxpayers anymore," said Reeve Bernie Bailey.

Council voted to proceed with several studies, especially the Environmental Impact study, as it can be very time sensitive.
