Bike riders pack Owen Sound school gym for Memorial Inside Ride

The Owen Sound District Secondary School was packed with cyclists Wednesday.

Over 100 elementary and secondary school students rode stationary bikes in the eighth annual Brendan Rourke Memorial Inside Ride.  Money raised goes to Childcan, which helps families of kids with cancer cover the cost of trips to hospitals outside the area.

Stokes Bay's Courtney Spungeon has to take eight-year-old Alex to London once a week. She said without Childcan she's not sure how she'd cope.

"They are an amazing group, absolutely fabulous. We're directly involved with them at the hospital, we get in touch with them every time we're there. If we need anything they're right there helping us so they're great," said Spungeon.

Childcan Executive Director Kathleen Barnard said it's great to see the young people riding the bikes helping others.

"It's wonderful to see them so engaged, wanting to do something great to support other children. It really is heartwarming to see this today," said Barnard.

Over the eight years of the Owen Sound Inside Ride, they've raised over $210,000 for Childcan.

The event is organized by Neal Rourke and his family, in memory of their son Brendan who died of cancer in 2012 at the age of 19.
