The success of the Junior C Exeter Hawks is presenting South Huron council with a bit of a dilemma. The Hawks won two games on the weekend to make it to the PJHL's Schmalz Cup semifinals.
That's further than they've ever gone before and council is now faced with the possibility of having to keep the ice in longer than they thought they would need it.
C-A-O Dan Best says it's a great problem to have but they are exploring their options. Best points out, they don't mind keeping the ice in but they have a very popular rummage sale booked for later this month that is going to need the arena floor.
"So staff are looking at some solutions now that can not only accommodate the ice to stay in, which isn't the issue, but we have some other community events that are coming up that actually require the use of the ice floor.”
Best says they're looking into the possibility of covering the ice with boards, but the municipality doesn't have any at this time, so they've asked staff to shop around and look at costs involved in renting boards and carpeting to cover the ice or any other options, and bring a report back to council so the can make a decision as soon as possible.
“That's why we wanted to take it back, have staff do a quick review, look at some of the costings, look at what our return on investment might be and then, in turn, get it back to council as quickly as possible for a decision.”
