Huron County Still trying to attract newcomers

An economic development officer with Huron County says the roundtable discussions they've initiated with different community groups are helping them develop relationships with employers and developers.

Chris Watson said the biggest challenge facing employers right now is finding employees.

The county is attempting to encourage immigrants to consider moving to Huron County and Watson said employers are telling them there is a learning curve for newcomers to the area beyond just getting used to the job, with things like language and cultural barriers.

"Once you're over those initial challenges, generally speaking, you end up with a very loyal, hard-working individual once you get through those first challenges," he said.

One of the biggest challenges the county has encountered in attracting newcomers is the lack of affordable housing, so they've also started roundtable discussions with developers and realtors.

Watson said that first roundtable was held at the same time as the Ministry of Housing was looking for feedback from a survey they conducted.

"We heard some suggestions and we actually submitted to the Province on their behalf," he said. "But also, they gave us a number of ideas on how they thought we could streamline the process a bit."
