Wellington North in dispute over pre-paid funeral

Wellington North council has decided an elderly woman won’t be getting any additional interest on the $250 she pre-paid in 2005 for her burial at the Mount Forest Cemetery.

Wellington North was ordered to return the money by the provincial body overseeing burials, and recently did so with about $9 interest.

But Joyce Huber said with the help of her bank manager she calculated she is owed $390 interest for the 14 years Wellington North had her money.

Members of council were sympathetic but indicated their hands are tied.

The cost of a burial today in Wellington North has gone up to $600. Huber will be required to pay whatever the going rate is at the time of her death.

Huber again refused the offer of $250 plus $9.15 interest and indicated she is going to continue to fight.
