Municipal council avoids high tax levy increase

Brockton council has settled on its budget after challenging deliberations.

Mayor Chris Peabody said it was challenging to get all the numbers worked out because there are so many things the municipality has on their hands this year, including roads department issues.

“We’ve got a lot of aging equipment, we had to replace a grater, a snow plow, sidewalk plow, so a lot of replacement items were needed in the roads department, as well as being able to fund maintaining the roads," he said.

Mayor Peabody said settling on the final tax levy increase was tough, as well.

“It was definitely a divided vote. At one point there were three councillors, we took a straw poll, that went for a rather high increase in the neighbourhood of eight per cent. But that didn’t pass, and we got it down to 2.84 [per cent]."

The mayor also said there is going to be a $100 levy specifically for the roads department from each household to help cover some of the increased costs that the department has seen.
