Maitland Conservation is shutting down its conservation education programs at the Wawanosh Nature Centre.
General Manager Phil Beard said the Nature Centre building had to be closed because it was no longer structurally sound, and building a new one was too expensive.
"We were trying to offer the service out of a building at the Falls Reserve Conservation Area, but there wasn't much interest in going to that. We also felt that it's important that conservation education work should be done in the communities where students live," he said.
Beard added the core members they serve are municipalities for flood and erosion safety, and landowners for watershed and stewardship issues, and with limited resources, they felt they had to focus on their core responsibilities.
