Wellington County OPP officers were called to investigate multiple motor vehicle collisions within a 24-hour period.
Between Sunday evening and Monday evening, Wellington OPP responded to 50 motor vehicle collisions. Of those 40 were non-reportable property damage, seven reportable property damage, one fail to remain property damage and two involving vehicles stuck in snowdrifts on the roadway.
Several roads were closed due to whiteout conditions, and motorists were told to avoid travel due to high winds and heavy snowfall creating poor road conditions.
Almost all of the collisions were as a result of the driver putting their motor vehicle in the ditch because they were unable to see where they were going or they drove into snowdrifts on the roadway.
Wellington County and the surrounding area is expected to get blanketed again today with approximately another 10 cm of snow.
During severe weather events, motorists are reminded to monitor the media outlets for updates, including road closures. Motorists are also reminded that driving on a closed road is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act. Doing so puts you and your passengers at risk and puts police and all Emergency Responders at risk who come to your aid.
