Owen Sound driver charged for having cannabis nearby

An Owen Sound driver has learned that you cannot have cannabis nearby while you are in control of a vehicle.

Police were conducting driver sobriety checks last evening in the 1500 block of 6th Avenue East in Owen Sound.  An officer detected a strong odour of marijuana from inside one of the stopped vehicles.

Their investigation determined the 31-year-old man was not driving impaired, but he was operating his vehicle with cannabis readily available.

Similar to the rules for alcohol, if you are transporting cannabis in a vehicle it must be either unopened or fastened and in its original packaging, or in baggage that is closed and is not readily available to anyone in the vehicle.

The driver had his cannabis seized and was issued a ticket under the Cannabis Control Act of Ontario for having it readily available while driving. This comes with an out of court fine of $215.
