South Huron plans to fight to keep its OPP detachment

The mayor of South Huron says Exeter is not going to give up its OPP detachment without a fight.

George Finch said he has heard the province is considering creating one central detachment in Clinton, and converting the Exeter detachment -- along with others like it -- into a community police office, which is not manned all of the time.

Finch, who was with the OPP for thirty years, has concerns about what a police officer in South Huron does if an arrest is made during a snowstorm and they can't take that prisoner to Clinton because the highway's closed.

The mayor said the detachment in Exeter is a valuable facility.

"It's a reporting location. It provides an opportunity for officers to come in and report there. There's a steno that works there. So it's a great place for the public to come to get police record checks done. It's a place of safety.  It's just a place that we need in the community," said Finch.
