Education Minister and Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson has said public consultations regarding Ontario's Sexual Education curriculum made it clear that consent is not being talked about enough.
Thompson said a draft curriculum will be tested in the spring, noting "we're going to move swiftly, and we're already analyzing the rich data that we received. We're going to be working on the curriculum through the winter months, we're testing it in the spring, and we're going to be ready to go with a curriculum that makes sense, in providing a safe and supportive learning environment for students in the fall of 2019".
The Ontario government wrapped up consultation on the sex-ed curriculum on December 31.
Thompson noted over 72,000 people took part in the consultations, and they're going to be drawing from it "for years to come" when it comes to making decisions about education in the province.
This week, a court application was filed by the Elementary Teacher's Federation of Ontario and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, which will try to force the government to reintroduce lessons on same-sex relationships, gender identity, and consent. These lessons were all contained within the curriculum introduced by the Liberals in 2015.
