Chronic staff shortages, mismanagement of medications, and failure to ensure a safe environment top a report by Ontario's Ministry of Health and Long Term Care regarding Walkerton's Brucelea Haven.
Brucelea Haven is one of two long-term care facilities run by Bruce County. The Walkerton home was cited for provincial care standard violations in late 2018, following inspections in August and September.
The violations include residents missing baths, being left alone for lengthy periods, as well as one allegation of verbal abuse from staff.
Bruce County Homes Committee Chair and Brockton Mayor Chris Peabody said, "it's an urgent matter, and something needs to be done quickly". He added that "county staff and councillors are committed to fixing it".
In the report, a Brucelea Haven staff member said staff shortages are having a negative impact on residents, some of whom did not always receive baths, mouth care and toileting.
The ministry found the facility failed to ensure a safe and secure environment.
