Provincial funding for local conservation projects frozen

Maitland Conservation is still waiting for funding for the Garvey Glen Priority Watershed project.

General Manager Phil Beard said it's a joint project involving the federal and provincial governments, as well as the county and the conservation authority.  The goal is to improve water quality for the nearshore of Lake Huron, north of Port Albert.

Beard said normally the funding is provided through the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks on an annual basis. But this year the funding has been frozen, pending a review of the project.

"All of the Conservation Authorities have been talking to their MPPs, and Maitland Valley has submitted a brief to our MPP Lisa Thompson, to see if she could talk to the Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks to see if funds could be released for this year," said Beard.

Maitland Valley Conservation is looking for $60,000 for the Garvey Glen project, but there six watershed projects waiting for funding. The total for all of them is $360,000.
