The Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health is continuing with it's "Lonely No More" pilot project this winter.
Project Coordinator Megan Fluit said winter weather makes getting out very difficult for seniors who are living on their own, and the Christmas season can add to feelings of isolation.
"If your loved ones are living far away and it's hard to visit them, or if you have recently lost somebody, this season and the holiday in general, everyone preparing for Christmas, can be really difficult," she said.
Fluit said that's where their program comes in.
"We have a teleconference system facilitated by volunteers, so without leaving your house, it allows you to call in, so you don't have to worry about transportation, but right from the comfort of your home you can talk to a group of seniors," she said.
Fluit added that the regular contact with the volunteer and other seniors in the group gives everyone important conversation and friendship at a time when some seniors and stuck inside for long periods of time.
