Paramedic response times reviewed in Huron County

Huron County is starting a review of its paramedic response times.

Chief of Emergency Services Jeff Horseman said there are two particular areas of concern.

"We suspect that what's going on in Bluewater is the demographics of the population is changing, and by that I mean more year-round residents are staying in Bluewater and therefore the call volume is increasing and we're not meeting response times because of the staffing pattern that's in Bluewater right now," he said.

Horseman says the other area of concern is the Egmondville area near Seaforth. The largest call volume in Huron East is in the Egmondville area and the closest paramedic station is in Tuckersmith on Highway 8 and Kinburn Line.  He said they're not able to consistently hit their eight-minute response target to Egmondville from that station.

This review will gather all of the historical data from Huron County and several other population sources throughout the province and put that into their system and then make recommendations on future staffing models.

Horseman added that the results should tell them where they should be stationing their vehicles and at what time of day. He expects it will take the consultants three to four months to complete their review and report to county council.
