Ontario's PC government has passed a bill to undo recent improvements to labour laws.
Bill 47, which was passed on Wednesday, removes two paid sick days and a scheduled minimum wage increase. It also forces workers to provide doctor's notes for minor illnesses, removes rules to have pay for part-timers at the same rate as full-timers doing the same work, and removes protections for temporary workers.
CUPE Ontario said workers and their families are already struggling in Ontario, and the so-called government for the people is making things harder for workers while cutting taxes for the rich.
CUPE Ontario Secretary-Treasurer Candace Rennick said a recent poll found that 77% of Ontarians support paid sick days and fair labour laws. Over 65% support the minimum wage increase to $15 per hour.
"The people of Ontario have made it clear that they have no interest in a government that exploits workers – it is shameful that Premier Ford refuses to listen," said Rennick. "We need an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top. CUPE Ontario will not stop fighting to make life better for working people."
