South Huron Trail gets its long-awaited pedestrian bridge

The major part of the work installing the Jones Bridge along the South Huron Trail has been completed.

The steel pedestrian bridge was dropped into place late last week. This week, work continues on the piers and the trail approach.

Kate Monk of the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority said they're hoping to have the bridge open for hikers by mid-December, but that's weather-dependent this time of year.

Monk adds the support of the community has been amazing. They have raised $250,000, and only have another $50,000 to go.

"We're hoping that comes in over the next few months. We're getting people that are looking at their personal income taxes and saying OK I'd like to donate before the end of the year, so they get the tax receipt right away and get those tax benefits right away too," she said.

Monk added that one of the huge benefits is the safety of hikers who will no longer have to use Morrison Line when they use the trail.
