Mosquitoes trapped in Huron County have tested positive for West Nile virus.
The Huron County Health Unit traps mosquitoes on a weekly basis, and a recent sample collected on August 22 tested positive for the deadly virus.
Other mosquitoes in neighbouring health units have also tested positive this year.
The best way to prevent mosquito bites is to wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts, long pants and closed-toe shoes, use an insect repellant that has been approved by Health Canada, check the screens in doors and windows to ensure there are no tears or holes, disturb or eliminate any mosquito breeding grounds on your property and dump any standing water in places such bird baths, buckets, old tires, pet water dishes and gutters.
