Renovations To Avon Maitland Schools Still On

The Avon Maitland District School Board has dodged a bullet regarding the Provincial Greenhouse Gas Reduction Capital Funding.

Superintendent Jane Morris explains the new provincial government announced that funding through that program would be cut, effective on July 3, but any tenders awarded or contracts signed before that date would be honoured.

“But this year we're not affected by that cancellation because we actually had all of our projects tendered and the contracts signed and actually the work has already begun before that July 3 decision or announcement that the funding was cancelled," she says.

She says it represented a significant expenditure since most of the schools in the Avon Maitland system are between 30 and 50 years old.

“We enjoyed or used that funding last year and this current year to support ongoing renovations, capital renovations, so when you think about capital renovations we're talking about roofs and windows and things like that," says Morris.

She says this year the board will receive over $800,000 from the fund and last year they received just over $1.7-million. Morris adds the need for the renovations is ongoing because of the age of the schools so the board will have to find other sources of funding going forward.
