Changes To Sauble Speedway Racing This Summer

South Bruce Peninsula council is putting restrictions in place before the green flag drops on racing at Sauble Speedway this summer.

Council approved a new regulatory bylaw for the race track, which now prohibits cars from using the track on Mondays and Tuesdays, and pushing back race night curfew by one hour to 11pm on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Race nights will be allowed on Saturdays and Sundays from 4pm until 11pm, with four hours of practice on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Mayor Janice Jackson says the updated regulations are designed to guarantee a couple days of peace and quiet for nearby neighbours, while at the same time giving Sauble Speedway a chance to succeed.

"It's a situation where we definitely want to support one of our most successful local businesses, but we also have to take into consideration the comfort level of the families who surround it," says Jackson.

Jackson says council received plenty of public feedback regarding the updated bylaw but says much of the feedback was fueled by individuals spreading misinformation.

"There were a lot of rumours out that they are going to be racing seven days a week, the old bylaw that we just rescinded today actually did permit them to race seven days a week," says Jackson. "We weren't comfortable with that, so we made the arrangements and the adjustments, so now they have five days instead of seven."

Jackson says the tentative schedule submitted by the track owners include racing on Saturday nights starting June 9th, as well as Sunday nights on long weekends and two select Thursday night races.

Sauble Speedway owners would be allowed to run races on the Monday of a long weekend if a previous night of racing had been rained out.
