Local MPs Concerned About Budget Spending

The MP for Huron-Bruce says spending announced in this week's federal budget sets up the country for challenging times in the future.

Ben Lobb says the $18-billion in deficit spending adds to the debt and the cost to service that debt will rise as well.

"In 2020, $33-billion per year will be required to service the interest on our debt," said Lobb. "That is very significant because that is coming close to exactly what our health care and social program transfer spends are as well. So it puts it in perspective on how significant it is."

As for investment into Huron-Bruce, Lobb says there is no new money, and in fact, there was $2.1-billion in lapsed infrastructure funding that never reached communities across Canada.

"When you think of our communities, from Wingham to Kincardine, to Port Elgin, Goderich, Exeter and Clinton and all in between, we have water upgrades that need to be made. We have sewer upgrades that need to be made. We have community centres that need to be upgraded along with roads, bridges and culverts," said Lobb.

Lobb also says there was no new money in the budget for agriculture even though Canada is trying to make headway into international markets like China.

In Grey-Bruce-Owen Sound, MP Larry Miller is concerned about the deficit spending.

In a release, Miller stated that there was a goal to return to balanced budgets by 2019. But with the deficit announced this week as part of the budget, that would be unlikely.

Miller said there are some initiatives that he will be monitoring, such as $250-million for Small Craft Harbours, $100-million over five years for rural broadband and a new lending product through Farm Credit Canada to encourage women to enter the agriculture sector.
