Bluewater District Schools Join Orange Shirt Day

Many staff and students with the Bluewater District School Board are sporting orange shirts on Thursday.

Orange Shirt Day is set for September 30 to honour residential school survivors.

However, since that falls on a Saturday, the school board designated Thursday to demonstrate their commitment to reconciliation.

The theme is every child matters.

Former residential school student Phyllis Webstad had her orange shirt confiscated at the age of 6 on the first day of residential school.

The Native Studies class a Kincardine District Secondary School organized a series of PA announcements to increase awareness of residential schools.

Ojibwe students at Saugeen District created various posters to be displayed throughout the school.
